3 Science of Immersion Facts
Good morning, my fellow pool lover. Welcome to the pool. Today I wanna share with you 3 facts about the science of immersion and how water depth impacts those. If we haven’t worked together before, my name’s Christa Fairbrother. I’m an aqua yoga coach and trainer, and I have a new pool.
So if you’ve worked with me before, you’ve seen me a little more shallow. This is my first time going live at this mid-chest height. Mid-chest height is our ideal depth that we work at in aqua yoga. And why is that? So it’s these 3 facts I want to share.
Water Science Fact #1
When we are at mid-chest height, we’re at about 75% offload of our weight. So the previous pull I had, I was above my belly button, so I was about 60%. Here at 75%, I’m displacing more water. That makes me more buoyant. I’m going to offload more weight off sore joints.
Water Science Fact #2
And I’m going to have less impact when I maybe do some fast stepping as I transition between postures. So fact number 2, we are all subject to hydrostatic pressure when we get in the water. That’s that inward pressure of the water everywhere, kind of like climbing into a big body sock. When we are deeper, we are more impacted by that hydrostatic pressure. And why that matters— hydrostatic pressure is what reduces swelling when we’re in the water, helps increase our circulation.
Water Science Fact #3
So we get some real benefits from that. And then the third thing is when I’m a little deeper, it’s easier for me to move my arms through the water. I don’t have to bend my knees or be in hip flexion. And so I can work with the viscosity of the water, which is what helps me build strength in aqua yoga, significantly easier because you can see I can stand up nice and tall. So I really look forward to sharing more of this pool with you.
It is a really nice pool. It is also really brisk because we just put it in this weekend. So I’m going to keep it really short today, but I will definitely be sharing lots more of this pool with you. I hope you have a beautiful weekend. Make it to the pool this weekend and take care of yourself.
